SELMO VASCONCELLOS - What are the impacts/effects that help to creat a perfect atmosphere to produce literature?
KURT F. SVATEK - I would like to answer with H. K. Kaul: “Poetry flows out when the conscious or the subconscious breaks open in some measures the barriers of silence of the mind and heart. The resultant strikes mental and emotional faculties of a poet like the waves of the ocean. But it is only when the mind is lost deep in the whirlpools of an issue that a poem is born.”
SELMO VASCONCELLOS - Which are the writers that you admire the most?
KURT F. SVATEK - Of course the famous Austrian and German Writers Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Bertha von Suttner (Nobel Price for Peace 1905), Nikolaus Lenau, Franz Werfel, Rainer Maria Rilke, Elias Canetti and Elfriede Jelinek (Nobel Price for Literature), Bert Brecht, Ingeborg Bachmann, especially Thomas Bernhard (Austria)…
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Josef von Eichendorf, Nikolaus Lenau, Heinrich Heine, Conrad Ferdinand Meyer, Erich Kästner (Germany), from France: François Villon, Baudelaire, England: Shakespeare, T. S. Elliot, W. H. Auden… Fernando Pessoa (Portugal)…
But he most I admire the ancient Chinese poets e.g. Li tai-bo, Du Fu…
KURT F. SVATEK - Com certeza os famosos escritores austríacos e alemães Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Bertha von Suttner (Prêmio Nobel da Paz em 1905), Nikolaus Lenau, Franz Werfel, Rainer Maria Rilke, Elias Canetti e Elfriede Jelinek (Prêmio Nobel em Literatura), Bert Brecht, Ingeborg Bachmann, especialmente Thomas Bernhard (Áustria).
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Josef von Eichendorf, Nikolaus Lenau, Heinrich Heine, Conrad Ferdinand Meyer, Erich Kästner (Alemão); Da Franca: François Villon, Baudelaire; Inglaterra: Shakespeare, T. S. Elliot, W. H. Auden… Fernando Pessoa (Portugal).
SELMO VASCONCELLOS - What incouraging message would you give to others writers?
KURT F. SVATEK - That’s difficult, because messages often do not go down well. I think a poet has to analyse and the question the society, but also to console the sad. He /she has to try to initiate social changes towards human understanding, love and compassion and universal brotherhood.

NIGHT-WATCH
It doesn’t matter so much
If I lie awake at night
As long as I’m in your arms
And your breath keeps me from thinking
Of what has been the other day.
True it has been some time
That the summer
Has stolen away over the hills
Almost unnoticed
And the crows have laid claim to the fields,
And still, there’s something in your voice,
Rendering much more than words can mean,
The way you look at me,
For, if you close your eyes,
I’m likewise blind.
It doesn’t matter so much
If I lie awake at night
As long as I’m in your arms
And your breath keeps me from thinking
Of what will be the next day.
Vigília Noturna
Não importa muito mais
Se eu despertar à noite
Desde que eu esteja em seus braços
E sua respiração me mantenha pensando
Quase imperceptivelmente
E os corvos pousam direto nos campos.
E ainda há algo em sua voz,
Exprimindo muito mais
Do que as palavras podem significar.
Da maneira que você me olha,
Se você fechar os olhos,
Eu serei igualmente amanhecer.
Não importa muito mais
Se eu despertar à noite,
Desde que eu esteja em seus braços
E sua respiração me mantenha pensando
No que será o próximo dia.

SENSUOUSNESS
To feel a body with hands,
To conquer a landscape
In pacing steps
With throbbing drum beats
Of the shamans
To receive respect
From the trembling, warm life
And to expel the dragons
From the visions.
To plunge the world
Into one’s own body
And to start a journey
In images of one’s self.
Always again,
Until the drums goes mute.
Only the simple melody of a flute leads now
Through the tunnel of sensuousness
Into the glowing ego.
Sensibilidade
Sentir o corpo com as mãos,
Conquistar um território
Em passos ritmados
Numa crescente batida de tambores
Dos Shamans
Para conquistar respeito
Da trêmula, quente vida,
E para expelir os dragões
Das visões.
Para imergir do mundo
No próprio corpo

IN THE DUSK
I pressed my brow against a tree,
Hugging
And yet not quite embracing
His rugged waist.
My palms grew chappy
And my forehead reddened.
Pleading for strength, I breathed
Keeping his time.
I was all him
And meditated all his power
And all his knowledge
Of our joint departure long ago.
Our pilgrimage led tree by tree
Beyond the roots
Into the everlasting temple of
Unselfish love,
Until his branches, instigated by the wind,
Roused my cheeks.
As for this journey
Still I was too imperfect and too young.
Ao Crepúsculo
Pressionei meu rosto contra a árvore,
Abraçando-a,
Mesmo sem envolver todo
Seu áspero tronco.
Minhas palmas ficaram ressecadas
E minha testa avermelhada.
Suplicando por relaxamento, eu respirei
Aproveitando o momento.
Eu era todo ela
E meditei com todo seu poder,
Todo seu conhecimento
De nossa partida juntos, tempos atrás.
Nossa peregrinação seguiu,
continuou árvore por árvore
Através das raízes,
Até o duradouro templo do amor altruísta,
Até que seus galhos, instigados pelo vento,
Tocaram minhas fases.
No entanto, para essa jornada
Eu ainda era muito jovem e imperfeito.

PRESUMPTUOUS
There’s someone judging a tree
By the shelter it provides;
There’s someone judging a path
By the number of pebbles covering it;
There’s someone judging a house
By the hands which have built it;
There’s someone judging a place
By the climate in which it is shrouded;
There’s someone judging fear
By the scream it gives rise to;
There’s someone judging a night
By the sin it lets occur;
There’s someone judging a word
By the sound it creates.
There’s someone judging people
By single moments;
There’s someone judging love
By how long a handshake lasts;
There’s someone judging the day
By the brightness of the morning;
There’s someone judging time
By its own characteristics.
As time is the only thing
To heal even the deepest wounds.
Solely the scars
Could ache later on
When the weather changes,
Since the skin is only
An extremely thin layer
Between our self and the world.
Presunções
Há alguém julgando uma árvore
Pelo abrigo que ela proporciona;
Há alguém julgando uma trilha
Pela quantidade de pisos que a cobrem;
Há alguém julgando uma casa
Pelas mãos que a construíram;
Há alguém julgando um lugar
Pelo clima que o cobre;
Há alguém julgando o medo
Pelo grito que o provoca;
Há alguém julgando uma noite
Pelos pecados que a permitem acontecer;
Há alguém julgando uma palavra
Pelo som que ela cria.
Há alguém julgando pessoas
Por um único momento;
Há alguém julgando o amor
Pelo tempo que dura o aperto de mão;
Há alguém julgando o dia
Pelo brilho da manhã;
Há alguém julgando o tempo
Pelas suas próprias características,
Enquanto o tempo é a única coisa
Que cicatriza a mais profunda ferida.
Somente as cicatrizes
Podem permanecer doendo
Quando o clima muda.
Pois a pele é a mesma:
Uma camada extremamente fina
Entre você mesmo e o mundo.

NO ANSWER
Can the clouds move on
Where ever they want?
How many of our dreams
Do they carry with them
And how many do they leave us
To bear them in our soul?
And is it true, that
If we have really dreamed
All our dreams one day,
There only remain a few white stripes
Apart from that our coat is black
Like the ones of the magpies?
Sem Resposta
Podem as nuvens se moverem
Para onde quer que elas queiram?
Quantos dos seus sonhos
Elas carregam consigo
E quantos deles elas deixam conosco
Para carregarmos em nossas almas?
E é verdade que
Se nós tivermos realmente sonhado
Todos os nossos sonhos um dia,
Só restariam algumas listras brancas,
Não obstante a nossa pele negra
Assim como aquelas dos pombos.

NÃO TE APROXIMES MUITO DA PRAIA
Amar é
Tentar abraçar
As ondas do mar,
Que em vão persegues
Com as pequenas cristas brancas,
Sucessivamente a brincar,
Presunçosamente poderosas,
Que apesar da sua imponência
De um abraço firme conseguem escapar,
As ondas quase titânicas,
Que a tua respiração arrancam
E que consigo muito arrastam.
Próximo da praia tranquila porém,
É lá onde todas se dispersam,
Como se nunca tivessem existido.
Amar é, pois,
Tentar abraçar
As ondas do mar.
***
Vela no Horizonte
A chegada do barco
Lembra-te do pequeno mercado,
Consigo imaginar
Que alguém ande sozinho pelos campos,
Para nalgum lugar a sua melancolia enterrar.
Mas não consigo imaginar,
Que alguém lê um poema
E logo depois outro mata.
***
Não há escusa
Eu, sozinho,
Não posso parar a guerra.
Eu, sozinho,
Não posso alimentar uma nação faminta.
Não posso construir
Conjuntos habitacionais,
Não posso parar as plantas industriais
Ou cultivar os campos para todos.
Mas eu, sozinho,
Posso fazer um pouco
De tudo isto para todos
Sem nenhum problema.
***
O velho
Vai haver Primavera,
Mas o velho
Verá só as folhas caindo.
Os ramos,
Dobrados com pesadas ameixas,
Construindo uma coberta
Sobre o caminho
Até o horizonte.
As uvas maduras
Brilham no sol do outono.
Vai haver Primavera,
Mas cada um de nós
Descobrirá,
Em algum lugar do caminho,
Uma folha morta.

Poetry / Poesias

NIGHT-WATCH
It doesn’t matter so much
If I lie awake at night
As long as I’m in your arms
And your breath keeps me from thinking
Of what has been the other day.
True it has been some time
That the summer
Has stolen away over the hills
Almost unnoticed
And the crows have laid claim to the fields,
And still, there’s something in your voice,
Rendering much more than words can mean,
The way you look at me,
For, if you close your eyes,
I’m likewise blind.
It doesn’t matter so much
If I lie awake at night
As long as I’m in your arms
And your breath keeps me from thinking
Of what will be the next day.
Vigília Noturna
Não importa muito mais
Se eu despertar à noite
Desde que eu esteja em seus braços
E sua respiração me mantenha pensando
Quase imperceptivelmente
E os corvos pousam direto nos campos.
E ainda há algo em sua voz,
Exprimindo muito mais
Do que as palavras podem significar.
Da maneira que você me olha,
Se você fechar os olhos,
Eu serei igualmente amanhecer.
Não importa muito mais
Se eu despertar à noite,
Desde que eu esteja em seus braços
E sua respiração me mantenha pensando
No que será o próximo dia.

SENSUOUSNESS
To feel a body with hands,
To conquer a landscape
In pacing steps
With throbbing drum beats
Of the shamans
To receive respect
From the trembling, warm life
And to expel the dragons
From the visions.
To plunge the world
Into one’s own body
And to start a journey
In images of one’s self.
Always again,
Until the drums goes mute.
Only the simple melody of a flute leads now
Through the tunnel of sensuousness
Into the glowing ego.
Sensibilidade
Sentir o corpo com as mãos,
Conquistar um território
Em passos ritmados
Numa crescente batida de tambores
Dos Shamans
Para conquistar respeito
Da trêmula, quente vida,
E para expelir os dragões
Das visões.
Para imergir do mundo
No próprio corpo

IN THE DUSK
I pressed my brow against a tree,
Hugging
And yet not quite embracing
His rugged waist.
My palms grew chappy
And my forehead reddened.
Pleading for strength, I breathed
Keeping his time.
I was all him
And meditated all his power
And all his knowledge
Of our joint departure long ago.
Our pilgrimage led tree by tree
Beyond the roots
Into the everlasting temple of
Unselfish love,
Until his branches, instigated by the wind,
Roused my cheeks.
As for this journey
Still I was too imperfect and too young.
Ao Crepúsculo
Pressionei meu rosto contra a árvore,
Abraçando-a,
Mesmo sem envolver todo
Seu áspero tronco.
Minhas palmas ficaram ressecadas
E minha testa avermelhada.
Suplicando por relaxamento, eu respirei
Aproveitando o momento.
Eu era todo ela
E meditei com todo seu poder,
Todo seu conhecimento
De nossa partida juntos, tempos atrás.
Nossa peregrinação seguiu,
continuou árvore por árvore
Através das raízes,
Até o duradouro templo do amor altruísta,
Até que seus galhos, instigados pelo vento,
Tocaram minhas fases.
No entanto, para essa jornada
Eu ainda era muito jovem e imperfeito.

PRESUMPTUOUS
There’s someone judging a tree
By the shelter it provides;
There’s someone judging a path
By the number of pebbles covering it;
There’s someone judging a house
By the hands which have built it;
There’s someone judging a place
By the climate in which it is shrouded;
There’s someone judging fear
By the scream it gives rise to;
There’s someone judging a night
By the sin it lets occur;
There’s someone judging a word
By the sound it creates.
There’s someone judging people
By single moments;
There’s someone judging love
By how long a handshake lasts;
There’s someone judging the day
By the brightness of the morning;
There’s someone judging time
By its own characteristics.
As time is the only thing
To heal even the deepest wounds.
Solely the scars
Could ache later on
When the weather changes,
Since the skin is only
An extremely thin layer
Between our self and the world.
Presunções
Há alguém julgando uma árvore
Pelo abrigo que ela proporciona;
Há alguém julgando uma trilha
Pela quantidade de pisos que a cobrem;
Há alguém julgando uma casa
Pelas mãos que a construíram;
Há alguém julgando um lugar
Pelo clima que o cobre;
Há alguém julgando o medo
Pelo grito que o provoca;
Há alguém julgando uma noite
Pelos pecados que a permitem acontecer;
Há alguém julgando uma palavra
Pelo som que ela cria.
Há alguém julgando pessoas
Por um único momento;
Há alguém julgando o amor
Pelo tempo que dura o aperto de mão;
Há alguém julgando o dia
Pelo brilho da manhã;
Há alguém julgando o tempo
Pelas suas próprias características,
Enquanto o tempo é a única coisa
Que cicatriza a mais profunda ferida.
Somente as cicatrizes
Podem permanecer doendo
Quando o clima muda.
Pois a pele é a mesma:
Uma camada extremamente fina
Entre você mesmo e o mundo.

NO ANSWER
Can the clouds move on
Where ever they want?
How many of our dreams
Do they carry with them
And how many do they leave us
To bear them in our soul?
And is it true, that
If we have really dreamed
All our dreams one day,
There only remain a few white stripes
Apart from that our coat is black
Like the ones of the magpies?
Sem Resposta
Podem as nuvens se moverem
Para onde quer que elas queiram?
Quantos dos seus sonhos
Elas carregam consigo
E quantos deles elas deixam conosco
Para carregarmos em nossas almas?
E é verdade que
Se nós tivermos realmente sonhado
Todos os nossos sonhos um dia,
Só restariam algumas listras brancas,
Não obstante a nossa pele negra
Assim como aquelas dos pombos.

NÃO TE APROXIMES MUITO DA PRAIA
Amar é
Tentar abraçar
As ondas do mar,
Que em vão persegues
Com as pequenas cristas brancas,
Sucessivamente a brincar,
Presunçosamente poderosas,
Que apesar da sua imponência
De um abraço firme conseguem escapar,
As ondas quase titânicas,
Que a tua respiração arrancam
E que consigo muito arrastam.
Próximo da praia tranquila porém,
É lá onde todas se dispersam,
Como se nunca tivessem existido.
Amar é, pois,
Tentar abraçar
As ondas do mar.

Vela no Horizonte
A chegada do barco
Lembra-te do pequeno mercado,

Consigo imaginar
Que alguém ande sozinho pelos campos,
Para nalgum lugar a sua melancolia enterrar.
Mas não consigo imaginar,
Que alguém lê um poema
E logo depois outro mata.
***
Não há escusa
Eu, sozinho,
Não posso parar a guerra.
Eu, sozinho,
Não posso alimentar uma nação faminta.
Não posso construir
Conjuntos habitacionais,
Não posso parar as plantas industriais
Ou cultivar os campos para todos.
Mas eu, sozinho,
Posso fazer um pouco
De tudo isto para todos
Sem nenhum problema.

O velho
Vai haver Primavera,
Mas o velho
Verá só as folhas caindo.
Os ramos,
Dobrados com pesadas ameixas,
Construindo uma coberta
Sobre o caminho
Até o horizonte.
As uvas maduras
Brilham no sol do outono.
Vai haver Primavera,
Mas cada um de nós
Descobrirá,
Em algum lugar do caminho,
Uma folha morta.
